Introduction: Symposium on Escaping Paternalism: Rationality, Behavioral Economics and Public Policy by Mario J. Rizzo and Glen Whitman

Rizzo and Whitman’s Escaping Paternalism (2019) is, at once, a scholarly treatise on the nature of rationality powerful critique use behavioral insights to support new paternalism in public policy. Since its recent publication, it has informed research, among other things, into decision processes paternalist policymakers (Ambuehl, Bernheim, Ockenfels 2021), implications dynamic preferences for tax policy (Delmotte Dold alternative theoretical grounds policymaking (Sunstein 2021; Sugden Whitman 2021). Its depth far-reaching methodological discussions within economics scope government action beyond contemporary debates. We are very grateful editor Review Behavioral Economics hosting this critical interdisciplinary discussion book. In introduction, we briefly review key arguments from then summarize contributions symposium. The diverse views expressed therein show that robustness biases their proposal “paternalism-resisting framework” is stimulating, but not uncontroversial. This special issue an invitation further engage with and, doing so, advance both debate about concepts (such as rationality, biases, internalities, or welfare) normative policymaking.
